Chapter Chapter 4 in Western Multinational Corporations in Latin America, 2022, pp 105-171 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter elaborates on a sensitive understanding of structure and agency that makes it possible to grasp institutional dynamics that occur when system-crossing MNCs and host country institutions interact. A two-step structure is applied to approach behavioral contradiction and institutional change in the host country caused by “alien-to-the-system” MNCs. First, analysis is brought up to the meso-level, scrutinizing the overlap of different modes of organization in the MNCs’ home and host country and the effect on foreign subsidiaries’ behavior. Second, potentially contradictory behavior in the host country is brought back to the micro (national) level at which it can cause institutional change through the channels of reverse isomorphism and institutional entrepreneurship. This chapter concludes with the assembly of the analytical framework Conflating Capitalisms.
