Abstract: Abstract Road transport is responsible for handling 38% of all food imports into South America in terms of value and likewise in other Regions (and exports from production site to the point of exit-border, port or airport). It is responsible for nearly all domestic movements and for a significant share of inputs to food exports—particularly in Central America and Mexico. Given this fact, the lack of road maintenance is emerging as the greatest threat to the affordable and reliable delivery of basic goods in most countries. High post-harvest losses in can largely be attributed to the poor state of the country's roads, especially secondary and access roads along with the lack of cooling capacity and services. More importantly, the poor connectivity and quality of the road network in most emerging economies make access to even local markets difficult, let alone regional or national markets.
