Chapter Chapter 3 in Global Investment Decisions in the Circular Economy, 2025, pp 31-43 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The construction industry stands at a pivotal moment, with advancing technologies and increasing sustainability demands reshaping its future. As a major contributor to resource depletion, carbon emissions, and waste generation, the sector faces mounting pressure to transition towards sustainable and circular practices. Conventional approaches that prioritise short-term gains are being replaced by strategies focused on long-term resilience, resource efficiency, and environmental responsibility. This chapter offers a forward-looking perspective on sustainability in the construction industry, emphasising key guiding principles for integrating circular economy practices, policies, and emerging technologies. It explores transformative trends such as digital twins, AI-powered analysis, blockchain-enabled material traceability, and smart construction techniques that drive resource optimisation and waste reduction. Additionally, it highlights the impact of industrialised construction methods and climate-responsive and regenerative design strategies in advancing sustainability. Thus, the chapter also reviews the role of policy interventions, financial incentives, governance, and public-private partnerships in accelerating the shift towards a circular economy. By addressing both challenges and opportunities, it provides insights into how digitalisation, AI, and circular practices can collectively enhance resilience, minimise environmental impact, and redefine the future of sustainability in the construction industry.
