Sustainable Development in Brazil

Gilmar Masiero

Chapter Chapter 3 in Brazilian Socio-Economic Dynamics, 2025, pp 51-74 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) prioritize reducing hunger and poverty, and various countries have been implementing these goals through diverse social programs. With more than 170 nations, 2500 non-governmental organizations, and nearly 8000 journalists in attendance, the Earth or Rio Summit of 1992 was one of the largest UN conferences since the publication of “Our Common Future” in 1987. Brazil has been a key participant in international discussions and the pursuit of sustainable development. However, Brazil’s adherence to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to Transform the World—established at the 2015 UN Summit in New York—has been inconsistent. Sustainable issues are the core of the coming item of this chapter, followed by a discussion of poverty in the world and Brazil. Economic development through industrialization and the Brazilian progress toward sustainable development goals are considered in the two nearing items. The description of the Amazon Fund and the Blue Amazon Brazilian wishes are two other themes, explored in this chapter that is closed describin some Brazilian digitalizing innitiatives.
