Chapter Chapter 3 in Knowledge Flows, Technological Change and Regional Growth in the European Union, 2013, pp 81-102 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract As pointed out in the introduction, the literature on endogenous growth demonstrates that the regional capacity to sustain innovation is embodied in the region’s institutions and resources – namely, its underlying technological infrastructure. Moreover, the process of innovation does not follow a straightforward linear model path from the laboratory to the marketplace. In other words, rather than being sequential, the innovation process is a spiral. Schematically, private business research is fuelled by diverse university research and diverse types of expertise coming from customers and suppliers. The latter also feeds back into university research.
