Chapter 1 in The Role of Universities in the Europe 2020 Strategy, 2017, pp 1-12 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The launch of the Europe 2020 strategy represents both a step forward in the EU process of integration and in the achievement of sustainable development amongst its member states during the next 7 years. Considering that the strategy has the objective of delivering smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, it also becomes a strategic tool to promote the goals of sustainable, smart and inclusive growth in those countries interested in joining the EU in the near future. Although these multiple principles are not necessarily compatible, to pursue them simultaneously and achieve them in a balanced way is the main challenge that the EU and all its member countries will have to face. The achievement of sustainability, although the existence of different theories which consider it either as a precondition or an element to build along with others, takes for granted the idea of a solid institutional infrastructure as a precondition to learning and adapting to incoming, and often unexpected, global developments and transformations.
