Abstract: Abstract This paragraph contains a review of the international literature assessing the body of research that addresses the research questions set in Sect. 1.2. To get a better understanding of the relationship between Universities and development, more particularly, about the role that Universities play to successfully and sustainably contribute to development, the following review of literature has been drawn: theories of development, the concept of knowledge, sustainability, social cohesion policy, social capital, social learning.
