Sam Sarpong

A chapter in The Future of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, 2020, pp 153-168 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract SustainableSustainable developmentSustainable development has gained some reputation for being a difficult concept to embrace. In spite of that, it is seen as critical, especially in Africa, where the concept can be positioned to reinforce pillars of long-term development. This is in view of its capacity to integrate economic growthEconomic growth , socialSocial development and environmental management in the building of sound policiesPolicy and credible institutionsInstitutions for governance. The chapter examines the inherently political and conflicting nature of sustainableSustainable developmentSustainable development and the difficult challenges it presents in Africa. It also looks at the role of firms in the sustainable development process and concludes that both African governmentsGovernment and corporate bodies can nudge up the developmental process by satisfying local expectations and needs through improved operating outcomes in their fields of endeavour.
