Abstract: Abstract Making the fundamental shifts required towards greater social responsibilitySocial responsibilities and sustainabilitySustainability requires a fundamentally different outlook and a systemic approach—for organizations, for individuals who drive change on their behalf and for those making the shifts out there on a daily basis to make it take hold in practice. For all these change-makers, keeping the line of sight between a big goal and what drives them personally is a challenge that can overwhelm and lead to inaction in the face of the current reality. Key elements that help making big, longer-term systemic shifts actionable in the day-to-day are valuesValues and decisions, paired with a “teal” mindsetMindset. (1) ValuesValues can help keep the line of sight between the big goal and what drives people personally. How they evolve individually and collectively helps to understand the fundamental, systemic nature of the shifts we are looking to make both as organizations and as individuals. This helps to bridge the gap between the current reality and the aspirations by keeping this linked to what people truly care about along the way. (2) A “teal” mindsetMindset with its way to see the whole system, to experiment and refine is the third key aspect to get this right—at least as an aspiration to work towards. (3) Day-to-day decisions are where these big goals and aspirations get practical, one decision at a time, and valuesValues help with fine-tuning. Current frameworks for decision makingDecision making don’t identify valuesValues as a key driver and neglect the role valuesValues play for sustaining the change-makers and for creating a movement and community Communities necessary to make that change. As people evolve, so do their valuesValues towards a more holistic, systemic way of being and doing, leading to better decisions and ultimately better outcomes.
