Abstract: Abstract Digitalization and the Internet of Things emerge many new technologies. One of these new technologies for data transmission is LoRaWAN. This paper investigates the potential of LoRaWAN for the use case of groundwater monitoring and how it can be determined. In this case, the target is to digitize groundwater monitoring points in Lower Saxony. Within the review of the exclusion criteria and the benefit analysis, LoRaWAN is a suitable technology for this use case. During the examination of the prototype, the theoretical range of LoRaWAN was not achievable due to the dense forestation at the water supply plant and the low antenna height. Therefore, a pure implementation with LoRaWAN is impracticable, and future work should investigate to what extent a hybrid solution with another technology is possible.
