Understanding the Nuances of Women-Owned Businesses in Emerging and Developing Economies

Yanire Brana (), Nayan Mitra and Mohammad Mostak Al Farhad ()

A chapter in Sustainable Transformation and Well-being, 2025, pp 175-191 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Women entrepreneurs play an essential role in economic growth, helping to provide job opportunities and social improvement on a worldwide scale. However, their journey as an entrepreneur is distinct from those of a male-owned enterprise. This article examines recent research on the status of women entrepreneurs in various regions of the world, particularly in emerging countries, and identifies the elements that determine their functioning. In addition to patriarchal attitudes and challenges in accessing capital for business, this contextual analysis confirms anecdotal evidence that outdated legislation and a lack of assistance targeted to women’s needs are the fundamental problems and determinants influencing female entrepreneurs in developing market regions. Although research on the psychological well-being of women in this context is still relatively scarce, this chapter refers to some of its potential challenges and opportunities that need to be further explored.
