Abstract:
Abstract Amidst growing income inequality in South Africa and recent scandals involving multinationals like Steinhoff and Tongaat Hulett, shareholders are increasingly scrutinising the size and structure of executive remuneration packages, particularly given the high levels of executive pay and excessive risk-taking by bank executives. Shareholders also demand greater transparency regarding the criteria and processes for awarding performance incentives. This chapter shows that socio-economic factors affecting South Africa can significantly influence how MNEs contribute to reducing inequalities through sustainable and ethical business practices.
