A chapter in Sustainable Value Chain Management, 2026, pp 349-368 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The textile industry faces significant environmental and social challenges throughout its global value chain. VAUDE, a medium-sized family-owned outdoor company from Southern Germany, has successfully implemented a holistic sustainability transformation while maintaining economic competitiveness. Under Antje von Dewitz’s leadership since 2009, VAUDE embedded sustainability as its core business strategy rather than treating it as isolated CSR initiatives. The company developed a comprehensive framework combining UN Sustainable Development Goals, planetary boundaries, Net Zero targets, and Economy for the Common Good principles to guide its transformation. Key elements of VAUDE’s approach include standardized environmental management systems (EMAS certification), its proprietary Green Shape standard, comprehensive chemical management (eliminating harmful substances like PFAS), fair working conditions throughout the supply chain (Fair Wear Foundation membership), and ambitious climate protection (validated Science Based Targets for Net Zero by 2040). The “VAUDE Share” initiative addresses living wages in production countries, while its circular economy approach extends product life cycles through repair services and sustainable materials. Between 2019 and 2023, VAUDE demonstrated that economic growth and sustainability can coexist, reducing global CO₂ emissions by 30% while increasing revenue by 32%. Despite challenges including initial resistance, goal conflicts, supply chain complexity, and inadequate legislation, VAUDE maintains its commitment to transformation. The company advocates for systemic change through political engagement, collaborations with industry associations, and public discourse. VAUDE’s experience shows that successful sustainable transformation requires deep conviction, courage, innovation, and perseverance, along with cross-sector cooperation to drive meaningful impact. The VAUDE story offers valuable insights for businesses seeking to balance ecological responsibility, social justice, and economic viability in an increasingly resource-constrained world.
