A chapter in Sustainability in Education, 2026, pp 55-81 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Inclusive education is increasingly vital as globalization accelerates and nations grapple with complex environmental, social, and economic challenges. This chapter examines sustainability in education as a transformative pedagogical practice for students. Integrating sustainability into education is crucial for equipping upcoming generations with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a responsible workforce. Curriculum design, experiential learning, and community engagement constitute vital components of an inclusive approach to effectively embed sustainability in education. Projects such as community service initiatives enable students to apply theoretical concepts and develop a practical understanding of sustainable development. Despite its importance, incorporating sustainability into education has faced considerable challenges, including limited resources and resistance to change. Educational institutions must adopt innovative strategies, such as collaborative partnerships within and across institutions, alongside professional development programs, to successfully integrate sustainability into pedagogical practices. Equipping students with sustainability competencies empowers them to address contemporary challenges and become socially responsible citizens. This chapter emphasizes sustainability as an integral component of education, essential for building a resilient and sustainable future for all stakeholders.
