Chapter 4 in Corporate Social Responsibility in the Energy Sector, 2026, pp 61-83 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In global environmental governance, the fragmented and often poorly coordinated landscape of sustainability initiatives has become a central challenge. This creates complexity for multinational energy corporations and national regulators striving for coherent and accountable action. This chapter directly addresses this challenge by providing a systematic, comparative analysis of the multi-scalar initiatives that define the operational context for the energy sector. Moving from regional to global frameworks, the analysis critically examines leading policy paradigms and institutional mechanisms. It investigates the distinct strategic approaches of major geopolitical actors, including China’s ecological civilisation framework, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, Brazil’s Amazon policies, the European Green Deal, and the evolving regulatory landscape in the United States. The chapter also synthesises the critical global normative and reporting architecture, analysing the influence of the UN Global Compact, ISO 26000, ESG criteria, and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Specialised industry standards, such as the IOGP/IPIECA guidelines, are evaluated for their practical application in upstream operations. By mapping this complex ecosystem, the chapter equips practitioners and scholars with a nuanced understanding of how international norms, regional strategies, and corporate reporting standards intersect. This synthesis is essential for navigating compliance, shaping credible corporate strategy, and aligning energy sector operations with the evolving global consensus on environmental stewardship and human rights.
