Chapter Chapter 9 in Education for Sustainability in Tourism, 2015, pp 135-154 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The people who live and work in destination communities are crucial, but often neglected, stakeholders in tourism. The literature on community involvement in tourism management and research into tourism impacts on destinations indicates that the involvement of destination communities in tourism governance is a key element of sustainability. This chapter will focus on residents of destination communities and outline the educational elements required to support more effective community based governance of tourism. It will also explore the ways in which tourism governance experiences could be used to support Education for Sustainability (EfS) in general and community action for sustainability beyond tourism.
