Chapter Chapter 13 in Economic Dynamics and Distributions, 2026, pp 385-421 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Partial differential equations are functional equations containing functions of two independent variables. If one of those variables is time, they are a powerful tool for addressing distributional dynamics. This chapter introduces the classic method of characteristics for solving linear, semi-linear, and quasi-linear one-dimensional equations. It also contains applications to transport, to age-dependent demographics, and to income distribution when there is aggregate social mobility.
