Chapter Chapter 10 in Social Stratification in an Aging Society with Low Fertility, 2022, pp 193-214 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, I discuss whether the mechanism generating social stratification changes when we consider the aging population as well as the change in the household structure. Three main topics are examined: (1) economic inequality in terms of income and savings, (2) the relationship between intergenerational occupational mobility and wealth inheritance, and (3) determinants of the economic well-being of the elderly, represented by the total value of household income and real savings. We found out that in the late-life stage, the demographic aspects such as marital status and sibling order, and relationships with other family members become important in determining economic well-being.
