Measuring Income Inequality
Satya Chakravarty
Chapter Chapter 1 in Inequality, Polarization and Conflict, 2015, pp 1-31 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 1 begins by presenting axioms for an index of inequality, and then it analyzes alternative approaches to the measurement of inequality. A discussion on subgroup decomposable inequality indices that can be broken down into between-group and within-group components of inequality for any partitioning of the population into some well-defined subgroups is also presented. There is as well a discussion on stochastic dominance relations and their equivalences with welfare orderings of income distributions.
