Abstract Antoine Augustin Cournot was born on the August 28th, 1801 at Gray, in Haute-Saône, in France. The family background was essentially rural, but an uncle of his was a public notary. He exercised a considerable infl uence in Cournot. He wrote in his Souvenirs concerning his birth: “Pour mon propre compte, je suis redevable de mon apparition dans ce monde à la révolution de 18 brumaire.
