Abstract:
Abstract This essay examines a theory put forward by Reginald Hansen: the social market economy with its subsidiarity principle is a consistent realization of the notions put forward by Gustav Schmoller, which the Catholic social doctrine went on to convey. This essay presents Hansen’s thoughts and undertakes an initial study of these. It reveals that the similarities between Schmoller and Müller-Armack went even further than outlined by Hansen. Furthermore, ways can be shown in which socialism of the chair (and Schmoller), or professorial socialism, influenced the Catholic social doctrine (it is one of Müller-Armack’s reference points), but this is a new field of research.
