Abstract: Abstract In his contribution “An Economist’s View of the Work of Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler and its Influence on the Encyclical Rerum novarum” Daniel Eissrich highlights the beginnings of the church’s social doctrine. The paper gives an overview about the development of the thought of Bishop Ketteler starting with the adaption of thomasian thought to the social question and finally leading to the rejection of both, capitalism and socialism. The paper compares the writings of Bishop Ketteler with the concrete positions of the later published encyclical Rerum novarum. With that not only the often cited influence of Ketteler on Rerum novarum is documented, but it also illustrates that the conception of catholic social teaching was widely influenced by the regional level of the church and not only a centralized Vatican issue.
