A chapter in The State of Economic History, 2025, pp 139-155 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the renaissance that has characterised the field of African economic history since 2010. I trace this renewed interest, predominantly by economists, to influential theoretical and practical developments such as the emergence of New Historical Economics and the establishment of the African Economic History Network in 2011. Despite these promising advancements, this chapter raises two critical issues: the divergence of two schools within African economic history and the underrepresentation of African scholars in this discourse. I analyse recent publication trends in economic history journals, addressing questions such as: (1) To what extent has this renewed interest in African economic history been reflected in academic journals devoted to economic history? (2) Who are the predominant contributors to this specialised field? (3) What strategies can be implemented to foster increased participation from African academics? This chapter proposes actionable recommendations to enhance interdisciplinarity and inclusivity within the field.
