Abstract Amid all the hustle and bustle of international trading markets at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the Spanish community in the Americas was rapidly expanding. In the fall of 1518, Hernan Cortez, who was mayor of Havana, managed to fund an expedition to explore the Mexican mainland.
