A chapter in Digitalization in Healthcare, 2021, pp 103-110 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Radiology has become a more and more important field in medicine by applying new technologies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to improve the speed and accuracy of making a diagnosis available, thus allowing for the most effective clinical management of patients. Significant monetary and intellectual resources have been poured into this field, making radiology an ideal candidate for investigating how digitalization has shaped this specialty and how it will evolve with new technologies entering the market. Attempts to use modern computing power and the idea that it would obviously be superior to brain power has been attempted quite a while. Early Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to mimic cognitive functions and application of Machine Learning have been used for computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) with mixed success in the past. New methods like Deep Learning and Convoluted Neural Networks (CNN) in very recent research suggest we are getting closer to the goal promising deep learning-based systems can achieve parity to board certified radiologists and even fellowship trained performance. Outsiders and young doctors often miss the value chain generated in radiology. New AI tools will enhance the radiologist’s job description, raising its importance to patient care even further.
