Chapter 2 in Contemporary Management Education, 2022, pp 15-32 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The “value” that business creates has been expressed in five influential “markers” in the values-debate represented by Milton Friedman (1970, shareholder value), Freeman, R Edward, (Strategic management. Pitman, A stakeholder approach. London, 1984, stakeholder value), Porter, Michael E and Kramer, Mark R, (Harvard Business Review 1–13, 2006, creating shared value); Donaldson, Thomas and Walsh, James P., (Research in organizational behavior 35:181–207, 2015, optimizing collective value); and, lastly, Freeman, R Edward; Martin, Kirsten E and Parmar, Bidhan L, (The power of and. Responsible business without trade-offs. Columbia University Press, New York, 2020, creating financial and social value). After an analysis of these views, the chapter closes with a values proposal and the implications for management education.
