Chapter 2 in Sustainability Leadership in Tourism, 2022, pp 7-25 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract What is sustainable tourism? This question might seem easy to answer, but it really is not, as there exist many different interpretations of the term. While there is no ‘exact’ definition (and academics love to come up with new concepts all the time), I know from my conversations with practitioners that they tend to find some more useful than others. Chapter 1 offers you a summary of the meaning and purpose of ‘sustainability’, in the context of tourism—based on what I have learned through the interviews and the panel sessions which we have conducted at SLP. We will also explore how ‘sustainable’ tourism differs from responsible, transformative or other forms of tourism, what the characteristics are of a sustainability leader or tourism changemaker, and what motivates some of the most successful of them to dedicate their career to tourism and sustainability.
