1+5 Rs: The Blueprint for Circular Manufacturing

Henrik Hvid Jensen

Chapter 3 in Circular Economy Opportunities and Pathways for Manufacturers, 2025, pp 63-66 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter introduces the transformative 1+5 Rs framework, guiding manufacturers in transitioning to circular manufacturing. It outlines a comprehensive approach to redesigning business models and operations to align with circular economy principles, ensuring long-term viability and success. The framework comprises six key components: Redesign, Reinvent: This approach focuses on designing adaptable, repairable, and upgradable products and reinventing business models to support these attributes. Redistribute: Explores the redistribution of products through recommerce and reuse, leveraging extended product lifecycles and shared economy principles. Repair: This section highlights the importance of repairability in product design and the development of service models that make repair convenient and economical, fostering a maintenance culture. Refurbish: Emphasizes refurbishment as a core service offering, giving products a second life and promoting quality over quantity. Remanufacture: Discusses designing products for disassembly and reusing parts, supported by business models that enable take-back schemes and remanufacturing services. Recycle: Consider recycling a crucial element of the circular economy, discussing how business models can incorporate recycling materials and harvested parts as valuable resources. The chapter also underscores the critical role of Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) in facilitating circular business models. LSPs are essential partners in the circular economy, enabling efficient collection, refurbishment, redistribution, and recycling of materials and products.
