Chapter 2 in Negotiators who Changed the World, 2025, pp 19-34 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract We examine the radical and transformative negotiation methods of Jesus Christ, positioning him as the ultimate servant leader. Amid a backdrop of political tension, religious tradition, and social divide, Jesus engaged a wide array of audiences, from religious authorities and Roman officials to ordinary individuals, using a mixture of firm conviction, empathy, and strategic communication. Through the use of parables, probing questions, and symbolic acts, such as during the Last Supper, he reframed conflicts to inspire self-reflection and bring about moral transformation. This analysis investigates key encounters, including his dialogue with the Pharisees on civic versus spiritual duties, his challenge to a wealthy young man to reconsider his attachments, his defense of a woman accused of adultery, and his response to Pontius Pilate under pressure. Each instance illustrates how Jesus’ approach transcended simple debate, emphasizing core values, shared vision, and servant leadership. Ultimately, his methods provide enduring lessons for modern negotiators and leaders, offering practical insights into balancing self-interest with ethical responsibility, promoting empathy, and building lasting, principled relationships.
