A chapter in Resilient Business Models, 2025, pp 327-337 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This case study, “Main Service: A Four-Decade Long History,” explores the enduring resilience of Main Service Srl, an Italian IT company specialising in management software for shoe factories. Founded in the early 1980s, Main Service has significantly surpassed the average lifespan of Italian companies by consistently adapting its business model to evolving technological landscapes and market demands. The chapter highlights the company’s strategic choices, including its early adoption of Unix and COBOL for stability and its specialised focus on the footwear industry in Campania. The case details Main Service’s proactive evolution from its initial SIM software to the more advanced SIM-X, designed for Windows operating systems with enhanced features and customisation capabilities. A key element of its resilience is the deep, collaborative relationships forged with clients, enabling tailored software solutions that address specific production complexities and extending its services to related sectors like heel and sole factories. The case also emphasises Main Service’s innovative approach to communication and brand image, utilising a unique, emotionally resonant tone across digital channels to build a recognisable brand. Through continuous technological adaptation, client-centric service, and strategic differentiation, Main Service exemplifies how an SME can achieve long-term profitability and sustained growth, even amidst global economic shifts and competitive pressures.
