Chapter 1 in Handbook of AI-based Media Disruption, 2026, pp 3-27 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on print media, including newspapers, magazines, and publishing. It explores the historical development, current applications, and future potential of AI in the print sector, which has often been overlooked in favor of more visible digital innovations. The research highlights that while AI adoption in print media has been slower compared to digital platforms, it is steadily growing. The chapter examines various use cases along the journalistic value chain, from research and verification to production and distribution. It discusses how AI technologies are transforming workflows, content creation, and business models in print media organizations. The analysis draws on recent studies and surveys that demonstrate increasing AI implementation in print newsrooms, albeit with challenges such as resource constraints and organizational readiness. Furthermore, the chapter addresses the complexities of integrating AI into traditional print journalism, including ethical considerations, skill requirements, and the need for strategic planning. It emphasizes that while AI offers significant opportunities for efficiency and innovation in print media, human oversight and journalistic expertise remain crucial. The research concludes by suggesting that the future of print journalism likely lies in a hybrid model that effectively combines AI capabilities with human creativity and critical thinking.
