Chapter 2 in Brand Intelligence, 2026, pp 33-64 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Platform enterprises are businesses that create value primarily by facilitating direct interactions between two or more distinct yet interdependent user groups. This chapter will explore the two-sided (or multi-sided) business model of platform enterprises. It then analyzes the relationship between traditional and platform enterprises and concludes that it can be both cooperative and competitive. This chapter also provides examples of how traditional brands explore growth and profit opportunities by extending their conventional product-focused business models to user- and data-focused digital platforms. It concludes with a summary of key concepts that brands should embrace to unlock growth and profit opportunities in the digital age. Core Concepts: Platform business model; Network effects; Two-sided markets; Light-asset structure; User base; Data accumulation; Algorithmic intelligence; User-centric; Flywheel; Siphon effect; Digital gatekeepers; Platform vs. product company; Collaboration vs. competition.
