Chapter 2 in Reskilling and Upskilling in a Globalized Economy, 2025, pp 15-45 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The changing demands on today’s workforce require diverse and innovative strategies for developing skills and competencies specifically tailored to the needs of organizations and individuals. To remain competitive, many companies need to close skills gaps, adapt to industry changes, meet regulatory requirements, and potentially maximize career opportunities to attract and retain talented employees. At an individual level, targeted reskilling and upskilling can help employees successfully manage professional transitions and improve their employability and career prospects. This chapter examines the evolving perspectives on skill and competency development, highlighting key trends shaping this field. Drawing on insights from current research and business practices, it explores the dynamics influencing workforce capabilities in today’s landscape. Moreover, the chapter provides an overview of common strategies for skill and competency development, an analysis of their importance for both organizations and individuals, and an exploration of critical questions and nuances.
