Chapter 4 in The Self-Driving Company, 2023, pp 53-66 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The aim of this chapter is to explain important technical topics for the self-driving company in a simple and understandable way for decision-makers. As an experienced software strategy consultant, for years I have repeatedly seen projects that do not work at all in large and successful companies. One example that illustrates this well is the app for buying a ticket from a public transport provider. The idea behind this principle is quite simple: it should enable users to search for a suitable connection on their cell phone and pay for the ticket with a click. The result: the app cost the transport company over 100 million euros—while an average app with similar functionality would cost around 70,000 €. This chapter describes the problem areas that went wrong in this large-scale project and provides numerous other examples and instructions for better solutions.
