Chapter Chapter 4 in Global Trends in Technology Startup Project Development and Management, 2023, pp 57-78 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Universities, especially major research universities, play a key role in national and regional economic development, with a critical component being the conversion of scientific inventions to innovation through the commercialization of university research. Unfortunately, commercialization success rates from university research are low, despite the introduction of many initiatives to increase the regional economic importance of knowledge mobilization and growing recognition of the regional benefits of using new technologies to catalyze venture creation. In this chapter, we examine the multiple ways in which universities and their communities’ benefit from the successful commercialization of university research, especially when this is through the creation of new ventures. We provide insights into major causes of low commercialization success, which can be explained by the context in which it occurs, a lack of process understanding, and fundamental changes in the technologies being commercialized and the role of venture creation.
