Chapter Chapter 1 in Information in International Law, 2024, pp 1-19 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Most theories of public international law and state behaviour rely on a certain degree of international law-related information reaching some key audiences such as third states or domestic actors. Information in international law can be analysed from three dimensions: transparency, or whether the information is public; salience, or whether the information gathers public attention; and issue-framing, or which sub-elements of the information are made more salient by the media and political elites. The main objective of this work is to contribute to our understanding of international law and state behaviour by empirically studying these three dimensions of information in international law in both treaty-making as well as international adjudication across several issue-areas such as trade and human rights.
