Abstract:
Abstract This chapter has scrutinized the relationship between economic development and the health status of the Punjabi population. On the basis of empirical evidence, it is argued that the adoption of the new economic policy in 1991 reduced public investment support to the health sector and increased the involvement of international agencies such as the World Bank. These agencies provided investment with a condition of allowing greater participation of the private sector in health and medical services. Consequently, the rise of private health and medical services has increased out-of-pocket health expenditure of households, which has made it difficult for the poor to access health and medical services.
