Abstract: Abstract The Northeastern region of India consists of eight states—Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Their performance has similarities as well as dissimilarities under different socio-economic and environmental parameters. They have wide divergence in per capita income but by and large have low inequality in income distribution. The incidence of poverty in five of the eight states is lower than the national average. Six out of eight states have a lower infant mortality rate than the national average. Six out of eight states have a higher literacy rate than the national average. The Environmental Performance Index based on air pollution, water quality, forests, waste management and climate change varies from 0.43 to 0.75 across these states against a national average of 0.58. This chapter analyses the socio-economic and environmental performance of Northeastern states.
