Chapter Chapter 2 in India and the Knowledge Economy, 2019, pp 39-105 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the role of the state vis-à-vis the market in the Indian context associated with the Enabling State. India needs to obtain the appropriate balance between the role of the State and the functions of individual agents in the market place, be they firms, households and other institutions, to harness complementarities and synergies, and unlock talents from right across India. In the course of this chapter, India’s performance on a number of parameters relating to enablers is considered relative to comparator nations. A key focus of the chapter is on institutional revitalisation and renewal in India, in the context of a much more accountable and participatory State. The chapter closes by taking a closer look at three areas of priority, health, housing and food to provide new solutions for the pressing problems in these areas, as illustrations of the Enabling State.
