Abstract:
Abstract The total numberof operations analysts who served as such during World War II (WWII) probably numbered in the low hundreds. Of these, a lesser number decided not to return to their prewar professions, but chose to start a new career that utilized and extended their wartime Operations Research (OR) experiences. They were the first generation of OR professionals. John F. Magee is a notable example of the second generation. These individuals helped define OR as a new science of decision making, and significantly expanded the application of OR to non-military settings.
