Chapter Chapter 1 in Planning Production and Inventories in the Extended Enterprise, 2011, pp 1-14 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Advances in modeling production system behavior over the past three decades have made it apparent that work-in-process (WIP) inventories, created by the dynamics of manufacturing systems, are an important characteristic of these systems. Furthermore, the recognition of the importance of lead times and the variability of lead times for system performance has lent additional emphasis to this behavior. Consequently, consideration of WIP and lead times has been a key aspect addressed in the analysis and development of various types of scheduling and job release systems, of which Kanban and workload-based methods are examples.
