Chapter Chapter 4 in Handbook of Operations Research Applications at Railroads, 2015, pp 79-118 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Railways use car scheduling systems to route railcars from origin to destination, predicting the sequence of blocks the railcars will be assigned to and the trains that will move those blocks. The resultant car schedules or trip plans are used to project future workloads at yards, expected train sizes, as a means to manage individual shipments and ensure that they are routed correctly, and as a way to provide estimated delivery times to customers or other railways in the route. Calculating accurate trip plans are critical to running a customer-focused railway, and surprisingly difficult to achieve. This chapter explains the car scheduling and trip planning process, as well as several advances under investigation or proposed, such as dynamic car scheduling.
