Chapter Chapter 1 in Spare Parts Inventory Control under System Availability Constraints, 2015, pp 1-10 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this introductory chapter, we discuss the importance of a well managed spare parts supply network for capital goods, such as lithography machines, medical equipment, trains, and baggage handling systems. Such goods are used in the primary processes of their users and a failure may cause a standstill of a complete factory or a whole airport. We describe the typical features within spare parts networks and their inventory control, such as the focus on availability of the systems that are being supported instead of the stock availability of individual Stock-Keeping Units as in regular inventory control, the use of lateral and emergency shipments, and the type of inventory optimization models. Finally, we explain the objectives of the book and we present the outline.
