Chapter Chapter 4 in Data Science for Nano Image Analysis, 2021, pp 75-108 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Many material science problems are centered around understanding the relationship between material structures and material properties/functionalities. Material structures are often imaged and characterized using microscopy techniques and described by the outlines of material interior and exterior structures, as well as the geometric features of these outlines, such as sizes, shapes and topology. To obtain the outlines, one segments a microscope image into foreground and background regions, and then extract the outlines of the foreground regions. We described the segmentation step in Chap. 3 . This chapter focuses on the statistical analysis of the sizes and shapes of the outlines, which is referred to as morphology analysis. The analysis involves several mathematical issues, including how one models the sizes and shapes, how one represents the statistical distribution of the sizes and shapes, and how one performs statistical inferences on a morphological distribution, namely statistical estimation of and hypothesis testing on a shape. These problems have long been studied in the subject area of statistical shape analysis. This chapter describes the general statistical shape theory and applications of the statistical shape theory in materials science.
