Abstract:
Abstract A delay-time model for a hybrid inspection and preventive replacement policy that is applied to a protection system is presented. This model considers an important aspect of maintenance quality: the probability of defect induction in the inspection. Defect induction is much more frequent than imagined, and in some circumstances, it can be considered a major vulnerability in systems whereby some serious accidents occur. This quality parameter is difficult to evaluate and estimate accurately, and has a large impact on the results and the definition of the maintenance policy. Therefore, to suitably treat this problem, we propose the estimation of an a priori probability distribution for this parameter. Given the uncertain context of the problem, a multi-criteria approach based on the application of multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT) is proposed in order to define the maintenance policy that presents the best compromise between the cost and the rate of unmet demands. A numerical application is presented. The results show the importance of following a structured protocol to build the multi-criteria model and that the expected a priori results may be not confirmed.
