Chapter Chapter 3 in Rankings and Decisions in Engineering, 2022, pp 33-47 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explores the concept of ranking from the perspective of the so-called Measurement Theory and its derivations. The first three sections carry out an extensive theoretical digression on the Theory of Scales of Measurement and the Representation Theory of Measurement, aiming to recall some basic concepts, such as that of measurement and scale. The fourth section presents an interpretation of the concept of ranking under the Measurement Theory, highlighting its differences from the concept of measurement. A plurality of pedagogical examples supports the description.
