Chapter 1 in Multi-Criteria Decision Making with Partial Preference Information, 2026, pp 3-27 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The efficiency of the decision-making process for any organization is a key factor for its success. Decision making affects the strategic results of any organization, as well as human life and the environment. Many decision problems have multiple objectives that need to be combined in some way. This chapter introduces decision problems with multiple objectives and the area of Multi-Criteria Decision Making/Aiding (MCDM/A). The focus is on preference-driven problems, in which the decision maker’s (DM’s) preference is obtained and introduced within the mathematical decision model. An overview for classifying MCDM/A methods is given, including a DM’s compensatory and non-compensatory rationality. The concepts and basic elements of MCDM/A are presented, including preference structures, intra-criterion and inter-criteria evaluation, needed to build decision models. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in MCDM/A is discussed. Also, some remarks are given on how to choose MCDM/A methods by means of building decision models.
