Chapter 26 in Multi-Criteria Decision Making with Partial Preference Information, 2026, pp 521-544 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary area that can be integrated with several areas of knowledge to promote a greater understanding of the human brain. In Multi-Criteria Decision Making/Aiding (MCDM/A), a gap is observed in the literature concerning using this approach to investigate and improve methods and systems. In order to narrow this gap, several studies have been undertaken to investigate how decision makers interact with MCDM/A methods in general, using the concepts and methods of the Decision Neuroscience subarea, focusing on value-based decision making and its connection with preference modeling. Also, the FITradeoff method and its Decision Support System (DSS) has also been investigated. Experiments have been constructed supported by neuroscience tools, such as Electroencephalogram and Eye-tracking. This chapter describes the experiments conducted to investigate the two paradigms for preference modeling—holistic evaluation and elicitation by decomposition. The main contribution is to show that making use of these neuroscience tools leads to several improvements that may be applied in MCDM/A methods and for the FITradeoff method and its DSS.
