Knowledge and Knowledge Management
Malgorzata Zieba
Chapter 1 in Understanding Knowledge-Intensive Business Services, 2021, pp 1-19 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Knowledge and knowledge management have been examined by researchers for several decades now. However, there is still no unanimity among researchers on those key terms. This chapter clarifies and introduces some notions and classifications that are essential for and applied in the remaining parts of this book. First, the definitions of knowledge are presented, together with its managerial features and a plethora of typologies. Next, there is presented the comparison of the different approaches and types of knowledge management. Among the discussed approaches, there are the Japanese approach, the resource approach and the process approach to knowledge management. There is also a comparison of these approaches presented with their advantages and disadvantages, which is rarely met in the literature. In the final section, the concept of customer knowledge management is briefly presented. The exploration of all those key terms and concepts is a necessary step in better understanding and examination of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) conducted in the next sections of this book.
