A chapter in Futurizing Intellectual Capital, 2025, pp 65-91 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Since individuals play an important role as both reservoirs and operational implementers of organizational knowledge, individuals’ intellectual capital should be a central interest in intellectual capital theory and practice. However, this seems not to have been the case, as only a small niche of research publications has examined the intellectual capital (IC) of individuals. This chapter builds on previous literature and a qualitative interview study among knowledge workers to propose a model for individual IC. In the model, five dimensions are outlined: human, structural, relational, renewal, and emotional capital, which span individual employees’ intellectual capital-related resources. The chapter takes IC theory forward by deepening knowledge on individual aspects of intellectual capital, thus paving the way for its more holistic and systemic understanding. For IC practice, the chapter provides insights concerning managerial applications of the individual IC model.
